India Secures 9th-Place Qualification with 3-1 Victory

In a thrilling encounter at the FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup 2023 in Chile, the Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team secured a convincing 3-1 victory against Korea in the 9th – 12th place qualification match on Friday.

Ropni Kumari (23’), Mumtaz Khan (44’), and Annu (46’) showcased their goal-scoring prowess for India, while Jiyun Choi (19’) managed the lone goal for Korea.

The opening quarter witnessed a fierce battle as both teams vied for an early advantage. Despite Korea’s dominance in possession and securing the first penalty corner, they couldn’t capitalize. India opted for counter-attacks, keeping Korea’s defense busy, but the quarter concluded in a goalless deadlock.

The second quarter maintained the intensity, with Korea and India persisting in their attacking strategies. Jiyun Choi (19’) broke the deadlock for Korea with a precise penalty corner strike, but India responded swiftly through Ropni Kumari (23’), leveling the score from another penalty corner.

In the third quarter, India took control, dominating possession and troubling Korea’s defense. Mumtaz Khan (44’) extended India’s lead with a brilliant penalty corner goal. The quarter ended with India in the lead at 2-1.

Riding on their momentum, India intensified attacks in the fourth quarter. Annu (46’) secured a superb field goal, giving India a two-goal advantage. Despite the lead, India continued to unsettle Korea’s defense, securing a 3-1 victory.

The win places India in contention for the 9th position after finishing third in Pool C. Their next match against either Chile or USA on December 10 will determine their final standing in the tournament.
