India’s First-Ever Women’s World Cup Victory
Team India made history by defeating South Africa in the final of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
After South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl first, the Indian batters put on a fantastic show. The hosts posted an impressive total of 298/7, with Shafali Verma leading the charge with a stunning 87 runs off 78 balls, including 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Deepti Sharma added a vital half-century, while Smriti Mandhana (45), Richa Ghosh (34), Jemimah Rodrigues (24), and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (20) all contributed valuable runs to set up a commanding total.
In reply, India’s bowlers dominated. Deepti Sharma was the hero once again, taking a brilliant five-wicket haul and dismissing Laura Wolvaardt after her century to put India on top. Shafali Verma picked up two wickets, and Shree Charani added one as India bowled out South Africa for 246, sealing a historic win for the hosts.

Following their victory, Harmanpreet Kaur and her team were invited by PM Modi to his residence. The players had a warm and inspiring interaction with him as he congratulated them for their incredible comeback and championship run.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the team’s resilience, especially after their tough start to the tournament, where they lost three consecutive matches. He praised the players for turning things around and bringing pride to the nation.

Words of Gratitude and Inspiration
During the meeting, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur remembered her earlier interaction with PM Modi after India’s heartbreaking 2017 World Cup loss. Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana also expressed her gratitude, saying that the Prime Minister’s encouragement has played a big role in inspiring young women to excel across all fields in the country.
Meanwhile, Player of the Tournament Deepti Sharma shared that she had been eagerly waiting to meet the Prime Minister. Modi discussed the “Jai Shri Ram” line in her Instagram bio and even mentioned her Hanuman tattoo, sparking a cheerful moment between them.
A Fun Moment with the Prime Minister
Adding a touch of humor, Harmanpreet Kaur playfully asked PM Modi how he always manages to stay so calm and focused in the present. The Prime Minister smiled and replied that it has simply become a part of his life.
He also recalled the spectacular Harleen Deol catch from 2021 and spoke about Amanjot Kaur’s stunning juggling catch in the final that helped dismiss the South African captain.
It was a day filled with pride, laughter, and motivation, as India’s women’s cricket heroes celebrated their remarkable achievement with the nation’s leader.
