Indian Football Team Exits World Cup ’26 Qualifiers With Controversial Goal

Football lovers called out referee Sung for the blunder against the Indian football team and bashed him for his “pathetic refereeing”. Some called it “an open robbery” against India.

The Indian football team crashed out of the qualifiers of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after going down 1-2 to Qatar.

India was playing in their final Group A match at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha against host Qatar. Lallianzuala Chhangte gave India the lead in the 37th minute as the men in blue stood on the threshold of making history by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Gurpreet Singh Sandhu-led India suffered a setback when Yousef Aymen found the net for Qatar in the 73rd minute.

However, the Qatari goal ran into a controversy as it seemed that the ball had completely gone out of the byline. India’s Jeakson Singh conceded a free-kick but the ball seemed to have gone out by the time Alhashmi Mohialdin pulled it back for Aymen. Aymen then went on to strike the equalizer.

Indian Football Team objected to the goal but with no VAR, the decision went in favor of the host country.

The replays vividly showed the ball crossing the byline for a corner- kick in favor of India.  However, South Korean referee Kim-Woo Sung adamantly awarded the possession to Qatar.

As the displeased Indian football team continued their game, the heartbreak struck when Ahmed Alrawi scored the second goal for Qatar in the 85th minute, thus dashing India’s hopes of getting a World Cup spot.

The disputed goal sparked outrage among Indian football fans who blamed it on the referee for depriving India of a golden chance to proceed into the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

“Rank 34th Qatar did an open robbery against Rank 121st India even when Qatar is already qualified for 3rd round”, slammed an X handle.

The Indian football team, who were placed second, got relegated to the third spot in the group table after the loss, denting their chances to make it to the Round 3 of the World Cup qualifier.

The Indian football team will now head to the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Round 3 qualification.
