Indian Sailor Vishnu Saravanan Secures Paris 2024 Olympics Quota in Sailing
Indian sailor Vishnu Saravanan secures Paris 2024 Olympics quota in sailing, marking a historic achievement for India in the ILCA World Championship in Adelaide.

Indian sailor Vishnu Saravanan achieved a significant milestone by securing India’s first quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics in sailing. The accomplishment took place at the ILCA World Championship 2024 held in Adelaide, Australia, where Saravanan participated in the one-person dinghy event.
Over six days of competition at the Adelaide Sailing Club, Saravanan accumulated 125 net points and secured the 26th position on the overall leaderboard. Notably, he claimed the fifth spot among eligible sailors, ensuring India’s representation in sailing at the Paris Olympics.
The ILCA 7 Men’s World Championship served as a crucial qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics, offering seven quotas for countries that had not previously secured Olympic berths. Saravanan’s performance in Adelaide earned him one of these coveted quotas.
The Sports Authority of India celebrated Saravanan’s achievement in a social media post, emphasizing that he secured India’s first Paris Olympics quota in sailing. As a beneficiary of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), Saravanan outsailed many Asian competitors to secure the Paris berth.
In the 2023 World Sailing Championships held last year, Saravanan had narrowly missed securing a spot for the Paris Olympics. Despite finishing 23rd overall, he fell just seven places short of obtaining one of the 16 Paris quota places available at the event.
Apart from his recent success, Saravanan won the bronze medal in the same sailing category at the Asian Games in Hangzhou the previous year. The 24-year-old sailor is a U21 World Championships bronze medallist from 2019 and represented India at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, finishing 20th in a field of 35.
The ILCA World Championship also allocated the remaining six quotas for Paris 2024 to countries such as Guatemala, Montenegro, Chile, Denmark, Turkey, and Sweden. Vishnu Saravanan’s accomplishment adds to India’s representation in sailing at the upcoming Olympic Games.
