The Indian senior women’s football team, after facing consecutive defeats, gears up for redemption and honor in their final match of the Paris 2024 AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament Round 2 against Uzbekistan.
Set to take on Uzbekistan at the Bunyodkor Stadium in Tashkent, this match marks India’s last in the current qualifying round, and the team is determined to avoid returning empty-handed.
Despite losses to Japan and Vietnam, showcasing glimpses of their capabilities, Coach Thomas Dennerby stresses the essential need for a stronger defensive strategy against competitive teams like Japan and Vietnam. “The key is a better build-up and stronger defensive roles,” he expressed.
Reflecting on the past matches and preparing for the upcoming game, Dennerby highlighted the importance of minimizing individual errors and maintaining a consistent performance throughout the game. While India lost 2-3 to Uzbekistan in a previous friendly in March, Dennerby anticipates a challenging yet competitive match, highlighting the necessity of playing for the team’s reputation and pride.
Acknowledging the team’s struggles, Dennerby commended defender Ritu Rani for her notable performances in the recent matches. Her adaptability and commendable efforts in different positions have earned praise despite the team’s challenges.
The final match against Uzbekistan represents an opportunity for the Indian women’s team to exhibit their strength and commitment, aiming to conclude the tournament on a positive note despite being unable to secure an Olympic spot.
