Indian futsal is about to embark on a historic journey as the national men’s team prepares to play their very first international match. The momentous event is set to take place on August 12, 2023, in a friendly encounter against Bahrain. The match will unfold at the Khalifa Sports City Hall in Bahrain, with kick-off scheduled for 8:30 pm IST.

The Indian squad, comprised of 14 talented players, has been meticulously selected based on their standout performances in the Futsal Club Championship held earlier in the year. The team arrived in Bahrain on Thursday evening, ready to make their mark on the international stage. Under the guidance of head coach Joshuah Vaz, India will engage in two friendly matches against Bahrain, scheduled for August 12 and 14.

These matches hold special significance as part of India’s preparations for their debut appearance in the AFC Futsal Asian Cup 2024 Qualifiers. The qualifiers are scheduled to unfold in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, spanning from October 7 to 11. India has been grouped alongside Myanmar and Palestine and hosts Tajikistan in Group E.

The anticipation is palpable as Vaz and his team approach this historic moment. “My first thoughts are those of excitement and eagerness to represent our incredible nation in its inaugural futsal match. I am confident that my coaching staff and the players are well-prepared and share the same enthusiasm for the upcoming match against Bahrain,” Vaz shared on Friday.

Bahrain boasts a seasoned presence in the realm of futsal, having participated in the AFC Futsal Championship since 2002. The nation also secured qualification for the last two editions of the AFC Futsal Asian Cup in 2018 and 2022.

Acknowledging the likely nervous excitement of their first international match, Vaz emphasized his approach. “Given that this marks our inaugural international match, there might be a few butterflies in the stomach. However, I am committed to ensuring that our players go out onto the field to enjoy the experience, with positive results following,” Vaz affirmed.

Vaz also directed a message to the Indian fans in Bahrain. “I extend my gratitude to all the fans who welcomed us at the Bahrain International Airport. I eagerly look forward to witnessing a strong show of support in large numbers as we see the boys in blue take the field tomorrow,” he conveyed.

The countdown is on as India’s futsal team steps onto the international stage, poised to etch their name into the annals of the sport’s history.
