The T20 World Cup 2026 will be hosted by the defending champions India, along with their neighbouring country, Sri Lanka, from February to March. This will be the tenth edition of the Men’s T20 World Cup and is held every two years. There are 20 participants in the tournament, and so far, 55 matches have been held.

After the unexpected rise in the skills of veteran and uncapped players in IPL 2025, the Indian team is going to face a major issue of selecting the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The new captain, Suryakumar Yadav, took over the captaincy in 2024 after the retirement of two legends of Indian Cricket- Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Suryakumar has been ranked No. 1 ICC T20 cricketer as well after his heroics in the T20 format from the first ball six against Jofra Archer to taking the match-winning catch in the finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. Under his captaincy Indian team played various T20 series with Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, and England. In all of those series, India came out as the winner.

Shreyas Iyer

The skipper of Punjab Kings, who took the franchise to the finals after 11 years, became the only captain to take 3 franchises of IPL to the finals- Delhi Capitals (2020), Kolkata Knight Riders (2024), and Punjab Kings (2025). Out of which he sealed the 3rd title for KKR but was not given much credit for the victory, so he proved his worth with PBKS’ success in IPL 2025.

He played a significant knock for PBKS, where the 87* run knock against Mumbai in the qualifier-2 was the most special one, as they eliminated Mumbai Indians and reached the finals. In 2024, Shreyas and Ishan Kishan lost their central contract from the BCCI, which they finally sealed back in 2025 after their elegant performances.

Shreyas was exceptional in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the Champions Trophy 2025. He provides the balance in the middle order for the white ball squad and also dominated the domestic tournaments, SMAT and Mumbai’s T20 league, where he is again in the semi-finals of the tournament.

After acheiving all he is probably the one who could not be ignored in any format for team India, for now he was left behind in the Test squad but through a BCCI insider a news came out that Iyer is now a part of white ball captaincy core and he will be consodered for the role in future.  Right now, Suryakumar Yadav leads the T20 squad, and Rohit Sharma is still available for the ODI team, leaving the Test and T20 post-retirement. Iyer can most probably replace Rohit in ODI captaincy and is the most deserving candidate for a place in the squad for T20.
