Mumbai Indians’ pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah made history in the IPL 2025 match against Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium. Bumrah became the franchise’s highest wicket-taker in IPL history, surpassing Sri Lanka and MI legend Lasith Malinga, with a total of 171 wickets.

Jasprit Bumrah Sets Record as MI’s Highest Wicket-Taker

Defending 215 runs, Bumrah played a key role in MI’s sensational 54-run win over Lucknow by taking out their lower middle order in just one over. In his return spell during the 15th over, Bumrah took three wickets in five balls, dismissing David Miller, Abdul Samad, and Avesh Khan.

The three wickets Bumrah took showed how well he was recovering after his injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He first bowled a full toss to David Miller, who has struggled with confidence this season. Miller couldn’t manage to hit the ball cleanly and sent up a high catch that was easily caught by Corbin Bosch at midwicket.

Next, Bumrah dismissed Abdul Samad with a slower, dipping yorker. It was a very full ball that Samad missed, hitting his bat on the ground, and the ball crashed into the stumps.

The third wicket was a perfect full and fast delivery to Avesh Khan, who had no chance to defend it.

At 140 runs with 5 wickets down in the 15th over, LSG were suddenly reduced to 142/8 by the end of the 16th over. After that, it was just a matter of time before LSG were bowled out for 161 runs in 20 overs.

Bumrah Overtakes Lasith Malinga in MI’s IPL History

Bumrah now holds the record for the most wickets for the Mumbai Indians with 171 wickets from 141 innings, surpassing Lasith Malinga, who took 170 wickets in 137 innings. Veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh is third with 127 wickets in 154 innings. Here are the top five wicket-takers for MI in IPL history:
