IPL 2026: The Indian Premier League has entered its final phase, with the venues for the qualifying rounds now officially announced. One of the strongest teams this season, the Punjab Kings started their campaign in impressive fashion. However, they suffered a disappointing defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad yesterday, marking another setback for the side. One of Punjab Kings’ biggest concerns has been their poor fielding, particularly dropped catches. The team missed three crucial chances during the match, which proved costly. Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a massive total of 235 runs, and in response, Punjab Kings failed to keep up with the required scoring rate and eventually lost the game. Following the defeat, Ricky Ponting reacted to the team’s performance.

SRH reached the top

Sunrisers Hyderabad climbed to the top of the 10-team standings with their seventh win of the season, moving to 14 points. With three league matches still left, one more victory should take them to the 16-point mark, a tally that is widely expected to secure a playoff berth.

Back to back loses for the Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings, meanwhile, slumped to their third straight defeat, and their disappointing fielding effort played a major role in the loss. SRH batters Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen were handed multiple lifelines, with three catches going down in the field. Prabhsimran Singh also missed a straightforward stumping chance against Klaasen, adding to PBKS’ struggles behind the wickets.

Yuzi Chahal created Chances

The dropped chances hurt Yuzvendra Chahal the most. The leg-spinner created several opportunities, only to see his teammates fail to hold on to catches. Shashank Singh and Lockie Ferguson both spilled chances off Chahal’s bowling, leaving the experienced spinner visibly frustrated as SRH capitalised on the errors.

Ponting remarks ‘Virus’

After the match, Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting admitted the side’s catching issues have become a recurring problem this season. Ponting said the team has repeatedly let chances slip in the field and described it as a pattern that continues to hurt them in crucial moments. He also backed Shashank Singh despite another dropped catch, explaining that the batter had recently returned after recovering from a hamstring injury and had been putting in extra work during practice sessions.

Head coach disappointed with performance

The former Australia captain stressed that the team had trained under lights at the venue a day before the game, so conditions could not be used as an excuse. Referring to the missed catches, Ponting made it clear that such opportunities have to be taken at this level, especially in high-pressure matches.
