IPL Records and Statistics: Hat Trick Record in IPL by Cricket Players

7 Min Read

The T20 format of cricket has advanced thanks to the Indian Premier League. The IPL has given the shorter format a completely new vision, and the rest of the globe is now following in its footsteps, which is not a bad statement. The 20-over game is a quick-paced, action-packed, and entertaining game. Because of this, cricket fans around the world prefer this variety of the game. Batters are free to pursue bowling at any time. Conversely, bowlers have greater chances to score a wicket.

But it becomes increasingly challenging to score a century in just 20 overs. Even yet, a small number of players have so far been successful. However, bowlers are only given 24 balls to throw for the full inning. They provide an equally important function to the batters. Some bowlers in T20 cricket have perfected the craft of bowling. We shall talk about bowlers that have taken a hat-trick in the IPL’s history in this article.

IPL has given India and international cricket several stars. In addition, this competition teaches bowlers how to handle pressure circumstances when bowling. In 2008, the prestigious league first played. Fans witnessed its first hat-trick in the first season alone. Lakshmipathy Balaji, a former Indian pacer who currently plays for CSK, was the first bowler to accomplish this during the competition. His greatest performance came when he took 5/24 against Kings XI Punjab (formerly Punjab Kings). Two further bowlers each took a hat-trick that same season. Makhaya Ntini of South Africa will take on KKR while Amit Mishra of India will face the Deccan Chargers.

Three hat-tricks were scored in the first season, and the same number were scored in the next season. But have you ever considered how amazing it would be if a bowler in T20 cricket hit a century? But all three of the hat-tricks in 2009 were achieved by specialist batsmen, not bowlers. These hat-tricks were achieved in 2009 by veteran left-handed Indian Yuvraj Singh and Indian captain Rohit Sharma. Against the Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Yuvraj Singh scored hat tricks. Rohit lost to the Mumbai Indians, his current team.

The first two seasons’ six hat-tricks were spectacular, but the next three only saw one each. Praveen Kumar won the hat-tricks in 2010, Amit Mishra won them in 2011, and Ajit Chandila won them in 2011.

Amit Mishra, a seasoned Indian leg-spinner, owns the record for most IPL hat tricks with three. When he recorded his third IPL hat-trick against Pune Warriors in 2013, he set the record. The second bowler to bowl against Punjab in three balls and pick up three wickets was Sunil Narine.

The Rajasthan Royals, who took first place in the inaugural IPL season, had another successful campaign in 2014, particularly in the bowling department. Two bowlers from RR each took a hat-trick during the 2014 season.

Shane Watson, an all-arounder, grabbed three wickets against SRH, and Pravin Tambe, against KKR. But the entire 2015 season saw no hat-tricks. Axar Patel, a bowler for Punjab, claimed a hat-trick against the Gujarat Lions in 2016, including a 4/21 bowling average.

After the years 2008 and 2009, the year 2017 saw three bowlers complete hat tricks. Andrew Tye took a hat-trick against Rising Pune Supergiant, Jaydev Unadkat took a hat-trick against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Samuel Badree took a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians. Not because of his hat-trick, but rather because he bowled one of the most efficient periods in IPL history, Badree’s performance was outstanding. The West Indian spinner only allowed nine runs in four overs while picking up four wickets.

Another season without a hat-trick was the 2018 campaign. However, only two bowlers were successful in achieving so in 2019. Sam Curran and Shreyas Gopal each scored a hat-trick against the Delhi Capitals and RCB, respectively. Third season without a hat-trick came in 2020. However, the 2021 season saw the Indian Premier League’s final hat-trick. And it was none other than Harshal Patel, the season’s “Purple Cap” holder. With three wickets in hand, the RCB pacer defeated the Mumbai Indians. With 32 wickets by the tournament’s conclusion, he tied for the most ever. In the IPL 2022, Yuzvendra Chahal scored the first hat trick.
