Ireland Makes History: Record-Breaking Test Series Win Against Zimbabwe

Ireland and Zimbabwe played a one-off Test match in Zimbabwe, where Ireland made history by winning the series.

The series started on 6 February and concluded on 10 February 2025 and Ireland won by 63 runs. This win marked the country as the fastest men’s team to complete a winning hat-trick in Test matches. They completed a winning streak in just 10 matches breaking the previous record of South Africa which needed 14 Test matches for the same.

It was a one-off Test match and the historic win by Ireland was made possible by outstanding performances of several players. Let’s take a look at them.

Andy McBrine (PC: BBC)

Andy McBrine: McBrine played the game of his life and scored 90 not out and 3 wickets. His outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award.

Matthew Humphreys (PC: Irish Examiner)

Matthew Humphreys: Matthew broke records with his match-winning performance. He secured a six-wicket haul in the second innings against Zimbabwe which is the best figure for Ireland in Test cricket. He dismissed Wessly Madhevere, the opponent team’s top scorer. He earned his maiden five-wicket haul during this match and proved to be a nightmare for the team.

Mark Adair: Adair contributed a valuable 78 runs in the first innings with the partnership of Andy McBrine.

Andrew Balbirnie: Balbirnie was the captain of the team and scored a half-century with 66 runs in 160 balls. He was unbeaten on day 2 with 32 runs contributing to the total 76-run lead over Zimbabwe. He expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance as a captain post-match where he also acknowledged the opponent team’s best player Muzarbani and his challenge.

Lorcan Tucker: Tucker contributed a valuable 58 runs off 95 balls in the second innings. He hit 6 fours and 1 six and also contributed to Ben Curran’s wicket with an incredible catch.

Barry McCarthy: Barry has a notable performance as he took 4 wickets for 75 runs in the first innings. He clean-bowled Brian Bennett and Newman Nyamhuri with a golden duck. He took significant wickets that ultimately led Ireland to victory.
