Jannik Sinner Opens Up About Doping Ban, Says “I Was A Bit Confused…

3 Min Read

Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked tennis player and three-time Grand Slam winner, recently opened up about his three-month doping ban. The ban stemmed from two positive tests for clostebol, a prohibited anabolic agent, in March 2024. Sinner and his team argued that the substance entered his system unintentionally through a spray used by his physiotherapist.

The World Anti-Doping Agency accepted Sinner’s explanation that there was no intent to cheat. However, under anti-doping rules, athletes are responsible for their team’s actions. After initially being cleared out by an independent panel, WADA appealed and ultimately settled with Sinner for a three-month suspension, stating that a longer ban would be “unduly harsh.”

Is Jannik Sinner's Controversial 3 Month Suspension Too Convenient?

The ban was active from 9 February to 4 May. This decision was criticised by many tennis icons like Serena Williams, who argued that if it were them, the punishment would have been much harsher. Jannik Sinner is all set to open his campaign again in the upcoming Italian Open on 9 May, and he opened up about his ban. He said on Monday, upon his arrival, “At the start, I was a bit confused because I didn’t know exactly.”

“Then I went home and stayed with my family. I tried to understand better what was really important to me. I know how many sacrifices I made, and my daily routine was always practice, practice, practice. But at that moment, I didn’t have any of that. I came to understand that what’s important to me are the people by your side. That they give you the strength to move forward and continue smiling. We went about a month without touching (a racket), and then we restarted really softly,”

Fans Troll Jannik Sinner For Being “Tone Deaf”

His response has been criticised heavily by fans who called him “tone deaf.” Fans wrote on X, “Grok, define tone deaf. 🤦‍♀️Wtf is wrong with him. Why is he surprised about anything..unreal. Players are not dumb or illiterate or jealous or any other nonsense. They see exactly what happened and are pissed off and rightfully so,”

“It seems that there hasn’t been overwhelming support for him amongst his peers. It’s a weird situation. I love his game, but he seems tone deaf about the optics,” another fan wrote.

Jannik Sinner’s ban resulted in a worldwide controversy. However, despite these critics, he will now start his campaign again in the upcoming Italian Open on 9 May 2025.
