KKR vs RCB, IPL 2025, Match No.1: The much-awaited tournament, IPL 2025 started with a blast with a thrilling match between KKR and RCB on the opening day. The game was held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, 22nd March. RCB had a strong start to the season, winning by seven wickets against the defending champions.
RCB’s Dominant Win in IPL 2025 Opening Match
Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 59 as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) easily beat the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by seven wickets in the opening match of IPL 2025.
RCB needed 175 to win, and Kohli partnered with England’s Phil Salt, who scored 56 from 31 balls, to add 95 runs for the first wicket. RCB reached the target in just 16.2 overs, with new captain Rajat Patidar contributing 34 off 16 balls. England’s Liam Livingstone hit the winning runs with two fours and a six, finishing not out on 15 from 5 balls.
On the other hand, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a powerful start, reaching 107-1 in the first 10 overs after Quinton de Kock was dismissed for just 4 in the first over. Sunil Narine and captain Ajinkya Rahane then added 103 runs for the second wicket.
However, RCB made a comeback with Krunal Pandya’s brilliant bowling, taking 3 wickets for 29 runs. He helped break the partnership by dismissing Rahane for 56, and also bowled out Shreyas Iyer for 6 and Rinku Singh for 12. Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood, who missed the Champions Trophy due to injury, supported Pandya well with figures of 2-22.
After the match, Rahane said his team was hoping to score over 200 runs, considering the good pitch, but RCB made the chase look easy. This victory sent a strong message as RCB aims for their first IPL title. They had reached the Eliminator in 2024 but were knocked out by Rajasthan Royals, while Kohli was the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 741 runs in 15 innings.
