India is hoping to win several medals in the Badminton category in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 and one of the strongest contenders in the Indian contingent is the talented shutter Lakshya Sen.
Lakshya is competing for India in the men’s singles category. He got off to a brilliant start in the first game of the group stage, defeating Gautemala’s Kevin Cordon in straight sets (21-8, 22-20). However, this win has now been declared as null and void as the match was unfortunately deleted.
Why Lakshya Sen’s Win In The First Match Of The Paris Olympics 2024 Was ‘Deleted’?
During the game, Lakshya Sen’s opponent Kevin suffered an injury on his elbow, and because of the same he has now pulled out of the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. So now, Kevin Cordon‘s remaining two matches of the group stage will not take place.
However, because of this situation, Cordon’s first match has also been ‘deleted’ from the record books. According to the General Competition regulations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), when a player pulls out of a tournament, all his previous games are declared as ‘deleted’.
As per this law, Lakshya Sen’s first win, which he earned after a hard-fought 1 point, won’t get counted. Sen’s current tally now stands at 0. The Badminton men’s singles group has now been converted into a 3-player group from a 4-player group.
Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen’s fate in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 now rests on his remaining two games of Group L against Joel Caraggi of Belgium, and Jonatan Christie of Indonesia on July 29th and 30th, respectively. Now, Lakshya needs to win both encounters to be on top of the group and ensure a place for himself in the next round of the Paris Olympics 2024.
Caraggi and Christie will also play 2 games each, whereas, Lakshya Sen is the only player to play an extra match. Talking about the group, currently, Jonatan Christie is sitting at the top of the group, having defeated Caraggi. It will be a tough task for Lakshya to defeat Christie, who is the no.3 seed and is one of the favorites to win the Gold at the ongoing event.
Notably, Lakshya Sen is competing in the Olympic Games for the first time in his life. He is one of the brightest Indian stars in badminton right now. He will be looking forward to leaving a mark on the hearts and minds of the young generation with his performance in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.
