Lando Norris has finally revealed the reason behind his retirement from the Monaco Grand Prix, which is a Power Unit issue that came up without any warning.

Lando Norris has started at eight and has been behind Alpine’s Pierre Gasly during the opening stages of the race.

Lando Norris has also reported these power unit concerns to McLaren since the start of the Grand Prix at Circuit de Monaco, but eventually, it became the reason for his retirement.

It was the second power unit-related retirement for Lando Norris in a row, as he was also not able to complete his run at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Lando Norris On Power Unit Issue

When the media asked Lando Norris about this issue, and whether he was aware of it becoming terminal, he said, “Not a lot. At the end, it pretty much went immediately. There were some issues at the beginning, and then more in the middle, and I don’t know if they’re related or not. We had to retire the car, so there’s not a lot I can do nowadays.”

Not only this, but Lando Norris also reported about the noises that were coming from his power unit just before his retirement on lap 45.

But McLaren’s attempt to fix this actually worsened it. Eventually, Lando Norris simply retired because of the pre-existing issue.

He explained: “Yeah, there was just a lot of stuff I could hear from the engine, the turbo, the battery- a lot of things that didn’t sound correct.”

“We tried to fix it, but it made the problem worse. We put it back, so I had the problems again, but it seemed we just had to live with it, and then in the end [we retired].”

This Monaco Grand Prix retirement represents another big setback for Norris in the championship fight.

After suffering a power unit-related retirement in Canada and now failing to finish in Monaco, the Briton has lost valuable ground to Kimi Antonelli, whose victory in the Monaco Grand Prix earned him the title of one of the drivers with the most consecutive wins in the F1 championship.

McLaren will now focus on identifying the root cause of the recurring reliability issues as the team looks to get Lando Norris’ campaign back on track in the upcoming rounds.
