Laura Wolvaardt, the leader of the South Africa women’s cricket team, has strengthened her association with the WBBL by agreeing to a two-year pre-draft contract with the Adelaide Strikers. This calculated step ensures that she is now the franchise’s official overseas signing before the WBBL overseas draft set for June 19, 2025.
Since signing with the Adelaide Strikers, Laura Wolvaardt has been a stabilizing presence at the top of the order. In five WBBL seasons, she has scored 1,726 runs at 71 games with an average of 27.83 and a strike rate of 110.92. Her efforts were crucial in guiding the Strikers to consecutive WBBL championships, although the team had a poor outing last season, finishing seventh with three wins from 10 games.
Expressing her enthusiasm about the renewed deal, Laura Wolvaardt shared:
“The club is like a second home for me, and I’ve created so many amazing memories here, particularly our back-to-back championship titles. Although last season didn’t pan out as we’d like, I’m extremely enthusiastic about the future and committed to assisting in bringing additional success to the Strikers and our incredible fans. I’m really looking forward to returning to Adelaide with the team.”
Head coach Luke Williams highlighted the importance of keeping Laura Wolvaardt in the team, describing her as a “world-class player” and a part of the core of the Strikers’ formation.
Her batting ability, leadership, and experience are priceless. She has always delivered in pressure situations and played a massive part in our past championship victories. We know she will be a cornerstone for us building toward a powerful WBBL|11 season and beyond,” Williams stated.
The draft of overseas players for WHBL and BBL will occur on June 19, and a single overseas player can be selected in advance by each side. WHBL’s overseas selection has been finalized through this pre-signing, with only WHBL’s Melbourne Renegades remaining without a pre-draft overseas signing for the WHBL 2025 season.
Laura Wolvaardt’s comeback is a huge shot in the arm for Strikers’ hopes for WBBL|11. With her reputation as a steady head, mighty stroke-play, and international experience, Wolvaardt will be expected to take a leadership role on and off the field. With the Strikers looking to bounce back from a disappointing season, her arrival could prove to be crucial in bringing the team back to championship contention.
