Lausanne Diamond League: The Diamond League 2025 season is nearing its conclusion with just two stops remaining along the way to the finals in Zurich. The season now heads to Lausanne, Switzerland, from August 19-20.
The Lausanne Diamond League promises to deliver world-class competition across sprints, middle-distance races, and field events. The competition will be crucial as athletes will look to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September.
Here are the athletes to watch at the Lausanne Diamond League 2025:
1. Noah Lyles Eyes Redemption in the 100m
After narrowly finishing second to Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson in Silesia, Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles is looking to bounce back in Lausanne. Thompson, who edged out Lyles last week, will miss the remainder of the Diamond League season due to shin discomfort, clearing the way for Lyles to claim a key victory ahead of Worlds.
“The more I run, the better I am getting. I get more excited each day,” Lyles told reporters after the Silesia meet. “We’ll see some really good races in Lausanne.”
2. Marileidy Paulino, Dina Asher-Smith, and Ta Lou Clash in Stacked 200m
The women’s 200m in Lausanne Diamond League will showcase a star-studded field, headlined by Marileidy Paulino, the Olympic 400m champion, who steps down in distance to test her sprint sharpness. She’ll face fierce competition from Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain, the 2019 world champion, Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith, Africa’s fastest woman, and American Brittany Brown.
This high-profile race is expected to be a major indicator of form heading into Tokyo.
3. Keely Hodgkinson Continues Comeback in the 800mLausanne
Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson returns to action with Lausanne Diamond League for just the second time this season after recovering from injury- and she’s already shown she’s back at her best. In Silesia, Hodgkinson delivered a world-leading 1:54.74 in the 800m, and she enters Lausanne as the overwhelming favourite.
Standing in her way is Prudence Sekgodiso, the reigning world indoor champion from South Africa, who will be eager to test herself against the Olympic silver medallist.
4. Emmanuel Wanyonyi vs Marco Arop: Middle-Distance Titans Collide
In the men’s 800m, one of the most intriguing battles of the meet will see Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi face off against Canada’s Marco Arop. Wanyonyi, now the Olympic champion and the joint-second fastest in history, renews his rivalry with Arop, the 2023 world champion and Canada’s first-ever global gold medallist at the distance.
The pair went neck-and-neck throughout last season, and their showdown in Lausanne could set the tone for Tokyo.
5. Raising the Bar
Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh leads the women’s high jump, continuing her dominant 2025 campaign. However, she will face a stiff challenge from Nafissatou Thiam, the Belgian heptathlon icon at Lausanne Diamond League. Both athletes are favourites for medals in Tokyo and will be looking to fine-tune their form.
6. Men’s long jump: A Rematch of the Tokyo Olympic podium
In the men’s long jump, it will be three-cornered fight among the Tokyo Olympic podium finishers. Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece- the reigning Olympic champion, Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock and rising Italian star Mattia Furlani will be pitted against each other.
