Liverpool Inch Closer To The Premier League Title

The excitement that followed the final whistle at Anfield was about much more than the Liverpool fans’ triumph in the Merseyside derby and their right to boast once more. The recent talks about Trent’s leaving situation and Salah, Van Dijk’s contract extension has not bogged the Reds down as they look forward with ambition.

Now, Liverpool is only 13 points away at most. With four victories and a tie from their last eight Premier League games, they will have won their first league title in five years and their first in front of fans in thirty-five years. This will be the second time that Liverpool will be the anomaly winner in the City era.

Liverpool had a difficult game, especially in the first half, as they were unable to completely contain Everton’s counterattacks despite anticipating their tenacious defensive strategy.

Everton’s long balls up to Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure caused some issues after the game was settled. Beto twice went through one-on-one, struck the post, and scored a goal that was disallowed for a fractional offside.

Virgil van Dijk was the one who went into difficulty on both occasions, but luckily for Liverpool, the evening’s most crucial head-to-head encounter was not between Beto and Van Dijk.

Diaz’s flick and Diogo Jota’s incredible technique to weave through and score

Luis Diaz troubled Jake O’Brien numerous times in the first half, finding openings to attack the Everton right-back. Near the start of the second half, Diaz’s flick from inside left helped to win the game.

Having dominated possession at a low tempo in the first, perhaps Slot decided his team needed to shake things up and force a more open contest with direct football.

And it was successful. The unpredictable, fast-paced football flurry that had swept through Anfield after Van Dijk and company started searching for long passes in behind the Everton defense was consistent with Diaz’s flick and Diogo Jota’s incredible technique to weave through and score.

Arne Slot Comments

Slot isn’t getting ahead of himself as he said,“Everyone showed today again how difficult it is to win a football game in the Premier League, and we know we are going to face eight very tough challenges,” he said to Sky Sports after the game.

“But as long as the players give as much as they gave today, we are in a very good position.”
