Malaysia Open 2025: World No 1s Shi Yuqi, An Se Young Win The Season Opener

The first badminton tournament of 2025-the BWF Malaysia Open 2025- belonged to the world number ones. 

Shi Yuqi and An Se Young emerged victorious in the finals to claim the Malaysia Open 2025 title  in men’s and women’s singles, respectively on Sunday (12 January).

In a repeat of the 2024 men’s singles final, Shi locked horns with Denmark’s Anders Antonsenin the final but tables turned this time round as it was the Chinese who prevailed to claim his first Malaysia Open title.

The 28-year-old beat Antonsenin 21-8, 21-15 to bag the crown in Kuala Lumpur.

In the women’s singles, An defended her title as she beat world number two Wang Zhiyi 21-17, 21-7.

The Korean became the first shuttler to post back-to-back wins in the final in Kuala Lumpur since Tai Tzu-ying in 2019.  Last year she became the first women’s singles player from the Republic of Korea to claim the Malaysian title.

In men’s doubles , Kim Won Ho/Seo Seung Jae of the Republic of Korea bagged the title while the women’s crown went to Japan’s Fukushima Yuki and Matsumoto Mayu in a three-set thriller, coming from a set down to beat Paris 2024 Olympic champion Jia Yifan and her new partner Zhang Shuxian 17-21, 21-15, 21-15.

Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand won the first Malaysian Open title for the country in mixed doubles, prevailing 21-13, 19-21, 21-18 against Chinese duo Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping.
