Mbappe’s Fitness Under Cloud As La Liga Race Heats UP

4 Min Read

The La Liga race has tightened once again, and the margin for error is rapidly disappearing.

Real Madrid return to action on Monday against Getafe CF knowing that another stumble could further complicate their pursuit of the La Liga crown. A shock 2–1 defeat at CA Osasuna last weekend knocked Los Blancos off the summit, allowing FC Barcelona to leapfrog them by a single point after 25 rounds.

Mbappe’s Fitness Looms Large

The central question surrounding Madrid is the fitness of Kylian Mbappe. The French superstar, who leads the league with 23 goals, has been managing a nagging knee issue and missed the midweek 2–1 victory over SL Benfica in the UEFA Champions League. That result secured Madrid’s place in the round of 16 with a 3–1 aggregate win, but it did little to ease concerns about their attacking depth.

Mbappe did feature in Pamplona during the loss to Osasuna, yet his absence in Europe suggests caution from the medical staff. Madrid’s injury list already includes key figures such as Jude Bellingham, Éder Militão and Dani Ceballos, stretching the squad at a critical juncture of the season.

If Mbappe is unavailable, the attacking burden will once again fall on Vinícius Júnior, who has rediscovered sharp form with five goals in his last four appearances. His pace and directness could be decisive against a typically disciplined Getafe defense that thrives on disrupting rhythm and limiting space.

Madrid’s challenge is not merely tactical but psychological. Having surrendered the lead, they must now respond under pressure- a scenario that has defined many of their greatest domestic and European campaigns.

Barcelona’s Balancing Act

While Madrid aim to steady themselves, Barcelona face a defining week of their own. The Catalan side host Villarreal CF in a fixture that carries both immediate and symbolic weight. Villarreal, sitting third, represent one of the league’s most cohesive and technically assured outfits.

Yet Barcelona’s eyes will inevitably drift toward their looming Copa del Rey semifinal second leg against Atlético Madrid. After suffering a 4–0 first-leg defeat, overturning the deficit in the Copa del Rey would require one of the club’s most memorable comebacks in recent years.

The scheduling leaves little room for recovery. Dropped points in the league could surrender the advantage they only just reclaimed, while an all-out push in the cup risks fatigue ahead of decisive domestic fixtures.

Atlético’s Quiet Surge

Atlético, meanwhile, continue to lurk just behind the leading pair. The arrival of Ademola Lookman from Atalanta BC has injected fresh attacking impetus, with four goals since his winter switch. Their weekend clash with bottom-side Real Oviedo offers a chance to build momentum before hosting Barcelona in what promises to be a charged Copa encounter.

If Atlético can maintain consistency, they may yet transform the title race from a duel into a three-way battle.

Trouble in Mallorca

Further down the table, upheaval continues at RCD Mallorca. Despite 16 goals from striker Vedat Muriqi- second only to Mbappe in the scoring charts- the club have slid into the relegation zone.

In a season already marked by dramatic swings, Spain’s giants now enter a stretch where every match feels like a statement- and every dropped point, a potential turning point in the title race.
