When you hear the name Nqaba Peter, it might not ring any bells, though it is definitely a name that stands out. But here is the exciting part: this 22-year-old is South Africa’s newest wrist-spinner and could be the one to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Imran Tahir. Tahir last played for the Proteas in 2019, leaving some pretty big shoes to fill.
His full name is Nqabayomzi ‘Nqaba’ Peter, and he has been steadily working his way up through South Africa’s cricket ranks. Ever since Tahir’s retirement, the Proteas have struggled to find a true replacement, but now they might finally have their answer. Nqaba does not have a ton of experience in the longer formats yet, but that has not slowed down his rise.
Nqaba’s selection for South Africa’s ODI squad in 2024 against Afghanistan came as a surprise to many. At the time, he had only four List A wickets to his name, but it showed just how eager the selectors were to bring in a young, fresh wrist-spinner, especially with Tabraiz Shamsi nearing the latter stages of his career.
He made his T20I debut later that year against the West Indies, starting strong with figures of 2/32. Since then, he has played 12 T20Is and taken nine wickets. In ODIs, he has made two appearances and picked up three wickets.
His most recent big moment came in the second T20I against Australia. Things did not start well as he was hit for 19 runs in his first over, but he bounced back to take 1/35 in three overs, claiming the wicket of Alex Carey. South Africa went on to win that match by 53 runs, leveling the series 1-1 with one game to play. Even though the numbers were not outstanding, it is clear Nqaba is part of the Proteas’ long-term plans.
At just 22, time is very much on Nqaba’s side. Test cricket could be in his future, but for now, the focus is on building experience and consistency. He still has a way to go before fully cementing his place, but right now, he is definitely moving in the right direction.
