Memphis Depay was instrumental in Louis Van Gaal’s Netherlands beating Gibraltar 6-0 in the World Cup Qualifiers. Depay now has 13 goals for the Netherlands in the calendar year, which is more than any other Dutch player has managed in history. He broke Kluivert’s record of 12 goals with his second of the night, after equaling the record with his first.
Memphis Depay scores twice
The Netherlands opened the scoring in the 9th minute after Virgil Van Dijk headed in a corner from Memphis Depay. The Barcelona man was given chance from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after a handball inside the penalty area. However, Depay’s efforts were saved by the keeper. Depay doubled his side’s lead three minutes later after Klaassen rounded the ball to Depay for an easy open-net chance.
After a long period of knocking on Gibraltar’s door, the Netherlands was given another penalty in first-half stoppage time. This time Memphis Depay confidently slotted the ball home for his side’s third.
Second half
Denzel Dumfries scored just after the start of the second half and Arnaut Danjuma added his side’s fifth in the 75th minute to give the home side a 5-0 lead.
Donyell Malen rounded off the scoring in the 86th-minute scoring after Memphis Depay released the Dortmund striker following a slick 1-2 between him and Weghorst.
Depay in good form
Depay ended the match with four-goal involvements in Netherlands ‘ 6 goals. Scoring twice and assisting twice. The Barcelona forward could have gotten a few more goals and assists barring poor efforts from the Dutch players. He now has 15 goal involvements for both club and country since the start of the 21/22 season.
Memphis Depay also holds the distinct record of being the top goalscorer and top assist provider in the European World Cup Qualifiers. He has scored nine goals and assisted 6 goals in the campaign.
