Memphis Depay shines as the Netherlands wins 6-1 against Turkey

Barca #9 scored a hattrick to push the Netherlands to the top of the table in group G.

Memphis Depay was brilliant once again as he helped his nation to a thumping victory with a hattrick. Meanwhile, Turkey went a man down in the 44th minute as Soyuncu was sent off.

Memphis Depay is confident

The Netherlands opened the scoring inside the first minute of the game. Berghuis played a cross into the penalty area for Davy Klassen who with a neat little heel flick passed the ball to Memphis Depay. The Barca forward showed the composure of his own as he laid a perfect lay-off for Klaassen to shoot. The Dutch #14 took his shot the first time. Although powerless, the first-time shot surprised the goalkeeper who could not react to the shot quicker.

The duo combined once again for the Netherlands ‘ second goal. In the 16th minute, Frenkie De Jong found Depay in a space between the lines. The forward flicked the ball in the air onto Klaassen who with an over-the-head flick, released Memphis Depay in behind the Turkish defense. The Barca forward made no mistake in finishing a stunning move.

The Netherlands was awarded a penalty in the 36th minute after Soyuncu fouled Klaassen inside the box. Depay scored the penalty in what looked like half panenka, for his second and Netherlands third of the night. Soyuncu was booked for the incident. Subsequently, the center-back got his second booking and was sent off in the 44th minute of the game after fouling Memphis Depay on the halfway line. The Dutch forward with a clean little touch burst past the Turkish defender.

With a man up The Netherlands continued their onslaught on Turkey.

In the 54th minute, Berghuis nodded down Bergwijn’s cross onto the path of Depay who headed the ball into an open net for his hattrick. Depay brimming with confidence on the night was at the right place at the right time to head home the goal. Substitute Guus Til scored the fifth goal of the night for the Netherlands in the 80th minute. Meanwhile, fellow substitute, Donyell Malen added a sixth goal for the Dutch late in the game. Then, into the stoppage time, Cengiz Ünder scored the consolation goal for Turkey.

The Netherlands is level on points with Norway on 13 points. However, the Dutch have a superior goal difference. Therefore, they go top of the table in group G
