The Western Conference represents one of two conferences that constitute the National Basketball Association (NBA), with the Eastern Conference being the other. Both conferences feature 15 teams grouped into three divisions. Each division has five teams, while the teams in the northwest division are as follows: the Denver Nuggets, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Utah Jazz. The Nuggets, Timberwolves, Trail Blazers, SuperSonics, and Jazz were the first five teams to join the Northwest Division.

The Trail Blazers and SuperSonics were relocated from the Pacific Division, while the Nuggets, Timberwolves, and Jazz were relocated from the now-defunct Midwest Division. Before the 2008-09 season, the SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder, however, they remained in the Northwest Division. The division’s membership has remained consistent since its establishment, except for this relocation.

Owner:

Alex Rodriguez’ stepped into the $1.5 billion bid to obtain the Minnesota Timberwolves in August 2022. Alex and Marc Lore were preparing to purchase the team.  The down payment ($250 million) had already been made in 2021, and it was envisaged that after the acquisition was finalized, they would be equal partners. Alex Rodriguez still needs to settle his outstanding balance, whereas Lore has already done that. The downpayment raises the value of the stock to 20%, leaving 7% for Rodriguez and 13% for Lore.

Minnesota Timberwolves (Overview):

The Timberwolves struggled in their early years, like the majority of expansion teams, but after adding Kevin Garnett in the 1995 NBA draft, the team advanced to the playoffs in eight straight seasons from 1997 to 2004. Despite losing in the first round in their previous seven efforts, the Timberwolves earned their first division title and moved to the Western Conference Finals in 2004. Garnett was awarded the NBA’s Most Valuable Player that season as well. After missing the playoffs in 2005 and losing Garnett to the Boston Celtics in 2007, the team went into repair mode for more than a decade.

Garnett was shifted back to the Timberwolves in February 2015, where he completed his career before retiring in the 2016 offseason. During the 2017-18 season, the Timberwolves reassembled around a young talented core led by center Karl-Anthony Towns and backed by veteran All-Star wing Jimmy Butler, as the team returned to the playoffs after a 14-year exile. Butler, in contrast, fought with his coach and teammates and was signed away during the 2018-19 season, which resulted in Minnesota ranking last in its division and missing the playoffs.

Achievements:

The Minnesota Timberwolves, like several other NBA franchise teams, still need to reach the NBA finals and win the championship. Since its inception in 1989, the club has been to the playoffs ten times, but it has only reached the Conference final once, in 2003-04. However, the Minnesota Timberwolves didn’t make the playoffs for seven straight seasons from 1990 to 1996, and then again for thirteen straight seasons from 2005 to 2017. It has earned only one Division title (2004) and no titles in the Conference.
