In recent years, there has been an unexpected uptick in run scoring in the 50-over format. One-day international (ODI) cricket is now as entertaining as the shortest format, the Twenty20 internationals, as sides often post 400 runs or more. Even in 50-over cricket, batters have improved their hitting skills because of the T20 boom.
Batsmen have increased the ante in hitting fours and sixes, taking advantage of the limited outfield space and the ever-improving bats. Batsmen, particularly during power play overs, are more likely to clear the ropes when field limits are in place because they perceive a considerably lower risk of going out of the field.

- Shahid Afridi (351)
Ex-Pakistan all-predilection rounders for big hits extend a long line. Shahid Afridi, a batsman for the middle order who debuted in 1996, played in 524 international matches. Of his 11,196 career runs, 2,856 came off sixes, 476 of which were from Afridi’s international play.
Afridi only participated in 27 Test matches, yet he smashed 52 sixes. However, his talent to hit sixes shone clearest in the 50-over format, where he belted 351 sixes in 398 ODIs. Twenty-over cricket was tailor-made for Afridi, who hit 73 sixes in 99 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
- Chris Gayle (331)
West Indies legend Chris Gayle has smashed the second-most sixes among all ODI players. At an average of 37.83 and a strike rate of 87.19, he scored 10480 runs throughout 301 games. During his match, the aggressive left-handed batter smashed a total of 270 maximums and 1500 fours. He finished with a top score of 189, which included 28 centuries and 68 fifties.
- Rohit Sharma (250)

The flamboyant batter scored 9359 runs while maintaining a strike rate of 89.25 and an average of 49. This consists of 29 centuries and 45 fifties, with a total score of 264. Rohit Sharma has the record for most sixes by an active player with 57.
