Formula 1 has always been a sport where engineering brilliance meets driver talent. Over the decades, several teams have shaped the history of the championship through dominance, innovation, and memorable rivalries.
The Constructors’ Championship, which determines the most successful team each season, was first introduced in 1958. Initially called the International Cup for F1 Manufacturers, the competition has evolved significantly over the years, with changing rules and scoring systems.
Here’s a look at the most successful teams in Formula 1 history, based on their Constructors’ Championship titles and overall legacy in the sport.

1. Scuderia Ferrari
The Italian team Ferrari holds the record as the most successful Formula One team in the history of the sport. The team was founded in 1950; has competed since the start of Formula One in 1950.
Ferrari was able to win its first Constructors Championship in 1961 when driven by Phil Hill and Richie Ginther. The Team was also able to have a second era of success in the 1970’s with drivers including Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter.
Michael Schumacher helped Ferrari to achieve their most dominant period between 2000 and 2004 by winning five straight Drivers Championships, which also allowed it to win six Constructors Championships throughout the 10 years.
In recent seasons, Ferrari has continued to be a very competitive team but has been unable to recapture the peak dominance it previously displayed.
2. Williams Racing
Under Frank Williams’ direction, Williams’ Formula 1 team quickly became very successful in the 1980s and 1990s as one of the strongest competitors in Formula1.
Many successful drivers raced for and contributed to Williams’ success, including Alan Jones, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and Jacques Villeneuve.
Unfortunately for Williams, starting in the late 1990s, Williams began sliding down the grid as a result of the regulatory environment, financial hardships, and increased competition from other teams.
3. McLaren
Founded by Bruce McLaren in 1963, McLaren has long been one of Formula 1’s most iconic teams.
The team enjoyed major success during the late 1980s when drivers Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost formed one of the fiercest rivalries in motorsport history.
McLaren’s last major resurgence came in recent years, culminating in a Constructors’ Championship victory in 2024 after a long wait.
4. Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team
Mercedes returned to Formula 1 as a full works team in 2010 after acquiring the championship-winning Brawn GP team.
The German manufacturer quickly rose to dominance in the hybrid engine era starting in 2014. During this period, Lewis Hamilton won six Drivers’ Championships with the team, while Nico Rosberg also secured a title in 2016.
Mercedes went on to win eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships, establishing one of the most dominant periods in Formula 1 history.
5. Team Lotus
Founded by Colin Chapman, Team Lotus holds a distinguished legacy as one of Formula 1’s great innovating teams.
Success was achieved through drivers like Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Mario Andretti, who all helped provide their share of remarkable accomplishments within the team.
In particular, Lotus is well known for introducing revolutionary engineering concepts, such as ground effect aerodynamics, which considerably changed the way cars performed in the late ‘70s.
6. Red Bull Racing
Red Bull entered Formula 1 in 2005 after purchasing the Jaguar team. Under the technical leadership of Adrian Newey, the team quickly became a championship contender.
Drivers Sebastian Vettel and, later, Max Verstappen helped Red Bull secure multiple titles across two dominant eras.
7. Cooper Car Company
Cooper made history by becoming the first team to win championships with rear-engined cars, a design that later became standard in Formula 1.
Australian driver Jack Brabham played a crucial role in the team’s success, winning back-to-back Drivers’ Championships in 1959 and 1960.
8. Brabham
Founded by Jack Brabham himself, the Brabham team quickly became competitive.
The team won consecutive Constructors’ Championships in 1966 and 1967. Later, driver Nelson Piquet secured two Drivers’ Championships for the team in the early 1980s.
9. Renault F1 Team
Renault achieved its biggest success during the mid-2000s with Spanish driver Fernando Alonso leading the team.
Alonso defeated dominant competitors like Michael Schumacher to win back-to-back Drivers’ Championships in 2005 and 2006 while helping Renault secure the Constructors’ titles.
Formula 1 history has been shaped by teams that pushed the boundaries of engineering and racing strategy.
