There’s a lot of talk about MS Dhoni’s future in cricket. He will turn 44 in July, and many think he might retire soon.
MS Dhoni’s retirement has been a hot topic for a while. He last played for India in 2019 and officially retired from international cricket in 2020. Since then, he has only played in the IPL. Many thought he would retire after the 2020 season.
MS Dhoni Drops Major Retirement Hint Ahead of CSK’s Final IPL 2025 Match
But Dhoni has kept surprising fans. After leading Chennai Super Kings to the IPL title in 2023, he chose not to retire. In 2024, he gave up the captaincy but continued playing for CSK.
Will MS Dhoni play in the IPL next year? This question is once again being talked about in the cricket world. When Dhoni came out for the toss on Sunday (May 25) for CSK’s final match of the season, Ravi Shastri asked him how he has managed to play in the IPL for 18 years despite his body.
Dhoni hinted that retirement could be near, saying his body is getting harder to manage.
“It’s (his body) surviving. Every year is a new challenge. It needs a lot of maintenance. Didn’t trouble me enough when I was playing international cricket,” MS Dhoni said.
A recent report said Dhoni was ready to retire in the middle of the tournament. This was why his parents came to watch CSK’s match against Delhi Capitals on April 5 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. But Dhoni changed his mind after captain Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured and couldn’t play the rest of the season.
Dhoni has had knee problems for years and had surgery after the 2023 season. His knee issues are also why he doesn’t bat higher up the order.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the team has given Dhoni the choice to decide when he wants to retire.
“It’s his call, we will never tell him anything. If he takes a decision, he will inform us. He hasn’t told us anything,” Viswanathan told RevSportz.
As CSK plans to bring in more young players and go through changes, it wouldn’t be surprising if this season is Dhoni’s last in the IPL.
