IPL 2026: Urvil Patel opened up about the conversation he had with legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni and the key advice that helped him deliver a record-breaking performance for Chennai Super Kings against Lucknow Super Giants. In that match at Chepauk, Urvil produced a sensational innings, smashing the joint-fastest fifty in IPL history by reaching the milestone in just 13 balls. His explosive knock completely shifted the momentum in CSK’s favour and set the tone for a dominant win.
Urvil Patel’s Historic knock
During the same innings, he went on a destructive spree, striking five consecutive sixes as CSK cruised to victory, finishing with a blistering 65 runs off just 23 deliveries. Before this breakthrough performance, Urvil had shown glimpses of his ability but had not fully capitalised on his starts. He had scored 24 off 12 balls against the Mumbai Indians and 17 off 9 balls against the Delhi Capitals, but those innings ended without being converted into bigger scores.
Dhoni’s advice changed everything for him
The Gujarat batter Urvil Patel soon sought guidance from former captain MS Dhoni to overcome his inconsistency at the crease. Speaking to the IPL website, Urvil revealed that Dhoni reassured him there was never any question over his talent and suggested that his struggles were more mental than technical.The 27-year-old explained that Dhoni advised him to keep things simple and focus on selecting the right deliveries to play and placing them in the right areas of the field.
‘Mahi bhai helped me’
Recalling their conversation, Urvil said, “After getting out in the last two matches, I spoke to Mahi bhai in the dressing room and asked him what I should do to convert my starts. He told me very clearly that there is no doubt about my skills. The only doubt is in my mind. He asked me to stay mentally strong and just focus on hitting the right ball to the right areas.
