Legendary cricketer MS Dhoni has taken an important step to legally own one of the most famous nicknames in Indian cricket – “Captain Cool.” The Trademark Registry of India has officially accepted and published the trademark for the phrase, which has long been linked to Dhoni.
MS Dhoni Moves to Secure ‘Captain Cool’ Title
MS Dhoni is now just one step away from officially owning the nickname ‘Captain Cool’, a title that perfectly reflects his calm and fearless leadership over the years. The trademark was accepted on June 16, 2025, and will be fully granted if no one objects within the next 120 days.
Dhoni originally filed the trademark application in June 2023, covering areas like sports coaching, training services, and facilities. But he ran into a roadblock when the Trademark Registry flagged that a company called Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited had already registered the phrase ‘Captain Cool.’
In response, Dhoni filed a rectification petition, challenging the company’s claim and accusing them of trying to cash in on his famous public image. The former Indian captain, who is the only one to win all ICC trophies, is now waiting for the final green light to make the nickname officially his.
Trademark Registry Accepts Application
Dhoni had said in his application, “This is a case of bad faith registration on the part of the company, aimed at deceiving the public and unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual.”
After multiple hearings, the Trademark Registry of India has accepted MS Dhoni’s application to trademark the title ‘Captain Cool’, a nickname fans have long associated with him.
Dhoni is one of India’s most successful captains, leading the team to wins in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy. He scored 4,876 runs in 90 Tests, 10,773 runs in 350 ODIs, and 1,617 runs in 98 T20Is. He also holds the record for the most stumpings in international cricket with 195.
In IPL 2025, Dhoni returned as CSK captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury. However, it was a tough season, with CSK finishing last for the first time in 16 years. Dhoni, who turns 44 on July 7, has not confirmed if he’ll play another season.
Last month, he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, honoring his incredible contribution to cricket. On the recognition, Dhoni said, “To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever.”
