Blackburn 0–0 Hull in the Premier League (Dec 2009)
At around 6.20 p.m., the final train from Hull to London departs. I was ignorant of this as I sat in the media lounge at KC Stadium on a chilly night. I sprinted to the station, but I still missed it. Since I was new to this industry and there were no hotels back then, I didn’t want to put the corporate expense account to the test. So after taking the train to Doncaster, I hurried over to the bus stop and waited there. and continued to wait. In fact, it wasn’t until 4 am that a National Express coach to London eventually arrived. At 9 am, I eventually made it home. The sport? Blackburn 0–0 Hull Regarding the referee, Phil Brown complained. One of Sam Allardyce’s players received criticism for not squatting in the vicinity. I put 300 words down. Really, it’s a ridiculous job. Jonathan Liew
Sweden 0-0 Turkey, Euro 2000 (Jun 2000)
I was able to persuade the editor of my first UK football media position that I should be sent to the Euro 2000 tournament. My enthusiasm levels were high because it was my first (and, as it turned out, last) major tournament. Sweden vs. Turkey in Eindhoven was one of the matches I was offered. It felt like a must-win game for both teams because both had lost their first matches (against Belgium and Italy), but what actually happened was nothing short of appalling. Not only was I perplexed by the awful meal offered, but others were as well. Lasse Granqvist declared on Swedish radio that Sweden vs. Turkey match ended in a score of 0-0. Marcus Christenson
Friendlies, Portugal 1-0 Argentina (Nov 2014)
You’re curious as to why the Nations League was accepted. Time travel to a freezing Old Trafford night. We were met at Manchester Piccadilly around lunchtime by a man selling half-and-half scarves of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo out of a sports bag, which perfectly captured the griminess of the event. This was the most pointless of pointless friendlies, and neither team appeared to want to be there. Most international friends are terrible. Andy Brassell
