NBA Records and Statistics: Field Goals Per Game for Each Player

8 Min Read

In gridiron football, the term “score” refers to a field goal (FG). A field goal must be kicked through the goal, that is, between the uprights and over the crossbar, by the team that has possession of the ball. The area above the crossbar and between the uprights, or, if above the uprights, between their outside edges, is the vertical plane of the goal. The entire ball must travel through this space. In American football, a field goal can only be made during a play from scrimmage (apart from a fair catch kick), however, in Canadian football, open field kicks are still allowed, meaning that field goals can be made at anytime from anywhere on the field and by any player.

In both codes, place kicks account for the great majority of field goals. Field goals that are dropped are nearly seldom made today compared to when gridiron football first began. Most leagues provide three points for a successful field goal (a notable exception is a six-man football in which, due to the small number of players available to stop a field goal is worth four points if the opposing team fails to block the kick.

Although it happens very seldom, a fair catch kick might also result in a field goal. Since a field goal only scores three points as compared to a touchdown’s six points, it is typically only attempted in certain circumstances.
