Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, the starting goal keeper for Bengaluru FC and the Indian National Football Team, was recently seen on camera throwing javelins as part of a club workout. The Inspire Institute of Sport’s social media page then shared a video of Gurpreet practising the javelin. The tweet mentioned Sandhu as Team India’s backup javelin competitor at the Budapest World Athletic Championship.
Neeraj Chopra, who won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was instantly drawn to the video. After that, the world-class javelin thrower was spotted playfully requesting Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to leave his club in Bellary and join the javelin team travelling to Budapest as soon as possible.
Gurpreet also joined in on this humorous banter. He retorted to Neeraj by noting that it takes skill to throw a javelin. He continued by saying that he could certainly toss a football if the world champion javelin thrower requested it.
This conversation quickly became popular online. With humorous texts and emoticons, fans responded to the conversation, expressing their love and happiness.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, 25-year-old Neeraj Chopra became the first Asian to win the Olympic gold medal. In 2021, he received the Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, which is India’s highest athletic honour.
He is currently taking part in the Budapest World Athletic Championship. At the previous World Athletic Championship, which took place in Oregon in 2022, he took home the silver medal. He was now the lone Indian to take home a medal in this competition. In a season-best throw of 88.77 metres in a Group A Qualifier on Friday, defending Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra advanced to the men’s javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships.
On the other side, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu just won the SAFF Championship with Team India earlier this year and is presently hard at work in the gym with Bengaluru FC in preparation for the upcoming Indian Super League season. When Sandhu was playing for a Norwegian team in 2016, he became the first Indian to ever compete in the UEFA Europa League.
