Neeraj Chopra Outplays Julian Weber For The First Time To Win Javelin Throw

Indian javelin throw sensation Neeraj Chopra has achieved the unimaginable. He finally outplayed his German rival Julian Weber to clinch the men’s javelin throw title at the Doha Diamond League on 20 June 2025. Weber had previously edged him out in multiple competitions.

Neeraj Chopra is a two-time Olympic medallist and reigning world champion. He set the tone for his victory with a commanding first throw of 88.16 meters at the Stade Sébastien Charlety. This opening effort proved decisive as Weber’s best throw was 87.88 meters, also achieved on the first attempt.

This win was Neeraj Chopra’s first Diamond League title in two years, having won the last in 2023. Since then, he had only been a runner-up in six Diamond League meetings, often narrowly edged out by Julian Weber.

Reflecting on his victory, Neeraj Chopra expressed satisfaction with his run-up speed and the overall result. He said, “I am happy with my throw… My run-up was really fast today. I can’t control my speed, but I’m happy with the result and with the first position.”

Neeraj Chopra had previously broken the 90-meter barrier at the Doha Diamond League but ended up losing the title as Weber also did his personal best and threw 91.06 meters in the final round.

Looking ahead, Chopra is all set to compete in the Ostraca on 24 June. He also revealed that his long-awaited Neeraj Chopra Classic will be held on 5 July 2025, which had been postponed.

He said, “I will compete in Ostrava (Golden Spike athletic meet) after four days on the 24th of June. So I need some recovery. I’m hoping for some 90-metre throws because I broke that barrier in Doha. So now I believe I can do it some more… But let’s see, it depends on weather and good conditions, how the body feels, but maybe I will throw far in this season.”
