Neeraj Chopra Wins Gold At Paavo Nurmi Games

Before the start of the event, a tough competition was expected between Neeraj Chopra and the young Max Dehning from Germany. However, the day went in favor of the Indian and German could only gather a best throw of 79.84.

Indian star Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won his maiden gold at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland. Chopra delivered a throw of 85.97m to clinch the gold medal. He beat two Finnish opponents Toni Keranen (84.19m) Oliver Helander (83.96m) to secure a comfortable win.

Chopra’s best came in his third attempt.  His first and second attempts were 83.62m and 83.45m respectively. With a fourth attempt of 82.21m, he fouled on his fifth. He delivered 82.97 on his sixth and last attempt.

The “Golden Boy ” of India, who won silver in the 2022 event, came back strong to upgrade the medal to gold this time. Considering he came back from a minor adductor muscle strain, the gold at the Paavo Nurmi Games comes as a major push ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024.

The 26-year-old started this season by finishing second at the Diamond League in Doha with a final throw of 88.36m. He then won a gold medal at the National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar with an 82.27m throw. However, he pulled out of the Ostrava Golden Spike athletics meet in Czechia last month as a precautionary measure due to an injury. 

Chopra’s next stop would be Paris where he would take part at the Paris Diamond League on July 7. He has withdrawn from the National Inter-State Athletics in Panchkula to be held from June 27 to avoid hectic load ahead of the Paris Olympics 2024.

The win at the Paavo Nurmi Games comes as a major boost to Chopra who would be vying for yet another gold medal at the Olympics. He is one of the top most hopes of India for gold at the Paris Games.
