New Zealand’s quick-bowler, Neil Wagner, is set to bolster Somerset’s cricket squad as an overseas player for the last three crucial matches of the ongoing County Championship season. Somerset, a county club, has signed Wagner, known for his left-arm pace, as part of their effort to strengthen their bowling prowess.
Wagner’s arrival at the Cooper Associates County Ground is timed perfectly for Somerset’s upcoming match against Hampshire on September 3rd. Originally slated to play for Yorkshire, Wagner encountered injuries—a torn hamstring and a bulging back disc—during a Test match against Sri Lanka in March.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Wagner shared, “I’m excited to join Somerset and contribute to their strong finish this season. English County Cricket is an experience I enjoy, and I’m eager to embrace the competitive Division One matches. Somerset’s goal is to perform well, and I’ll be striving to support that.”
At 37 years old, Wagner brings a wealth of experience, having participated in 63 Tests for New Zealand, claiming 258 wickets with an impressive average of 27.50. His prowess extends to first-class matches as well, where he has captured 807 wickets across 199 matches at an average of 27.09. With 36 instances of taking five or more wickets in an innings and two instances of claiming 10 or more wickets in a match, Wagner’s capabilities are substantial.
Andy Hurry, Somerset’s Director of Cricket, expressed his satisfaction with Wagner’s inclusion, stating, “We’ve diligently sought a skilled international bowler for the season’s final red-ball fixtures. Neil is a proven performer at the highest level and brings invaluable experience, along with a deep understanding of Championship cricket. Together with our other talented bowlers, we’re confident in our ability to consistently secure the 20 wickets required as we approach the Championship’s final phase.”
During the initial phase of the season, Somerset featured overseas pacers Matt Henry and Peter Siddle, who have since concluded their stints with the club. Wagner has previously showcased his talents in English county cricket, representing Essex, Lancashire, and Northamptonshire.
Currently positioned at the fifth spot in Division One of the County Championship, Somerset’s strategic acquisition of Neil Wagner aims to fortify their bowling prowess for the decisive matches ahead.
