Minnesota Vikings NFC Team History:

  • Minnesota was awarded an NFL franchise at a January 28, 1960, owners’ meeting in Miami. Their inaugural season was in 1961. It was founded by Max Winter, E. William Boyer, H.P. Skoglund, Ole Haugsrud, and Bernard H. Ridder, Jr.
  • In the late summer of 1960, Bert Rose, who had been the Los Angeles Rams’ public relations director, became the team’s first General Manager.
  • The first head coach of the franchise was Norm Van Brocklin. He played quarterback in the NFL for 12 years and is now in the Hall of Fame, but he retired in 1960.
  • After the 1960 season, the Vikings could choose three players from each team’s roster. Each team could protect 30 of its 38 players, though. Dallas did not have to do this. OL Grady Alderman (from Detroit) and RB Hugh McElhenny were picked (San Francisco).
  • On August 5, 1961, the Vikings played their first game against the Dallas Cowboys. It was a preseason game in Sioux Falls, SD. The Cowboys beat the Vikings by a score of 38–13.
  • Bert Rose’s first move with the team was to suggest to the Board of Directors that the team be called the “Vikings.” The name was chosen because it reflected both a person who is aggressive and wants to win and the Nordic culture of the upper Midwest.
  • Minnesota’s 8-5-1 record in 1964 was the first time in the team’s history that they had a winning season. They won their last three games of the season. The Vikings tied with Baltimore for second place in the NFL’s Western Conference.
