The NHK Trophy 2025 is set to get underway on Friday, May 16 bringing the best of Japanese gymnasts together.
Oka Shinnosuke, the Olympic all-around gold medalist, is the reigning champion of the competition. He lifted the NHK Trophy for the first time last year ahead of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. However, that came in the absence of Hashimoto Daiki who pulled out on the week of competition due to a finger injury.
Oka denied both the men’s all-around and horizontal bar titles from him at the Paris 2024 Games.
In the 2025 edition, Daiki is back and will be looking to reclaim his crown. While he has been struggling since the injury, he is spirited to give his best.
The two were at loggerheads at last month’s All Japan All-Around Championships in the nation’s first-ever meeting of Olympic all-around gold medallists. A rejuvenated Daiki held off Oka by six-tenths of a point for his fifth consecutive triumph.
The battle of the two Olympic champions will reach its crescendo on Sunday (18 May) at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
The NHK Trophy also serves as a final qualifier for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta in October.

The NHK Trophy is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union (ISU), organized and hosted by the Japan Skating Federation. The first NHK Trophy was held in 1979 in Tokyo.
When the ISU launched the Champions Series (later renamed the Grand Prix Series) in 1995, the NHK Trophy was one of the five qualifying events. It has been a Grand Prix event every year since.
