Norway Chess 2025 Round 9 took place on 5 June 2025 and delivered historic results. With five out of six classical games ending in a decisive victory, a rare feat at such an elite level was seen. The round delivered high drama, and both open and women’s standings saw a dramatic turn of events and set up a nail-biting finale scheduled for 6 June 2025.

Magnus Carlsen 3-0 Fabiano Caruana

Magnus Carlsen, who is currently rethinking his career at classical chess, saw a decisive win against Caruana. Sacrificing a pawn at Catalan, Carlsen gradually seized the opportunity, and the game ended with a win, earning him 3 points. With this win, he further extended the gap between him as the leader of the tournament and the player trailing behind him.

D. Gukesh 3-0 Wei Yi

The World Champion Gukesh D delivered another statement performance. He’s been unstoppable ever since he defeated Carlsen in a historic match, and he has now defeated Wei Yi to claim his fourth classical win at the Norway Chess 2025 Round 9. The victory brought Gukesh second in the championship standings, with just 0.5 points away from being on top. 

Hikaru Nakamura 1.5-1 Arjun Erigaisi

The game between Nakamura and Erigiasi was the only game that ended in a draw in the Norway Chess 2025 Round 9. However, Nakamura dominated the Armageddon tiebreaker, securing an extra half point. This resulted in Nakamura accumulating 13 points, which still keeps him in contention for the title.

Anna Muzychuk 3-0 Ju Wenjun

Anna Muzychuk defeated the reigning world champion Ju Wenjun with a brilliant positional sacrifice. Her judgment and tactical awareness allowed her a promising position, leading to a 3-point victory.

Lei Tingjie 3-0 Koneru Humpy

Koneru Humpy led the standings before the Norway Chess 2025 round 9 and suffered a devastating blow. Despite being in a strong position against Lei, a late blunder cost her victory. This loss dropped her to the second position in the championship, leading to a dramatic change in events. 

Sara Khadem 3-0 Vaishali Rameshbabu
