D Gukesh’s Historic Win Over Carlsen

Carlsen, playing in front of his home crowd in Stavanger, looked to be in control for most of the game, using his strong position to press the attack. But Gukesh stayed calm and defended well. When Carlsen made mistakes under the faster time control, Gukesh took advantage with a sharp counterattack and won the game.

After the win, Gukesh was very happy. He gave his coach, Grzegorz Gajewski, the strongest fist bump he ever had from the young Indian player. This was a great comeback for Gukesh, who had lost to Carlsen earlier in the tournament while playing with the black pieces.

Magnus Carlsen’s Frustration and Social Media Message

For the second year in a row at Norway Chess, an Indian teenager has beaten Carlsen in classical chess. Last year, it was R Praggnanandhaa, and this year, the world champion Gukesh joined him. Carlsen looked in control for most of the game, but like the changing weather in Stavanger, everything changed very quickly.

Chess legend Susan Polgar talked about how big this loss was for Carlsen:

Carlsen rarely loses in classical chess, and he rarely commits big blunders. He was playing so well with the black pieces in round 6 in Norway against Gukesh. He had a winning position with more time on the clock. But Gukesh did not give up. He continued to fight and Carlsen’s advantage slowly disappeared. Then when both were in time pressure, he made a huge blunder which cost him the game. This has to be one of the most painful losses in his spectacular career. I am sure he is very angry with himself,” she said.

Carlsen was upset after losing to Gukesh, slamming the board and quickly leaving. He had beaten D Gukesh earlier and called himself the “king” of classical chess on social media.

Magnus Carlsen took a break from classical chess after winning the 2025 World Championship. This was his first classical game since D Gukesh became the youngest world champion.

Arjun Erigaisi also won his match, and D Gukesh’s win has shaken up the tournament as it nears the final rounds.
