Serbia’s sensational Novak Djokovic produced a stunning display of skills as he defeated Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(3) 7-6(2) to get his hands on the prestigious golf medal in the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024 tennis men’s singles final at Roland Garros on Sunday. The 37-year-old from Serbia won the fierce battle on Court Philippe Chatrier to claim his first-ever Olympic Gold.
Novak Djokovic Outlasts Carlos Alcaraz For Olympic Gold
It has to be noted that winning an Olympic Gold was the last significant accomplishment missing from the glorious career of Novak Djokovic, who has already won a men’s-record 24 Grand Slam titles and the most weeks spent at No. 1 in the rankings by any man or woman. Though, he already had a Summer Olympics medal, from the 2008 games, however, it was a bronze and that wasn’t enough for the genius.
And now when he has finally won the Gold, it doesn’t matter one bit how long it took for him to reach there – it was meant to take place. Novak Djokovic is now an Olympic champion and will forever remain so. He is a legend in every true sense.
Meanwhile, the years of waiting for this title made him appreciate the win even more. That is the reason why his tears flowed and his hands trembled when he knelt on the red clay of Court Philippe Chatrier at the end of the game.
Novak Djokovic, who is the oldest man tow in the Summer Games tennis title since 1908, said: “When I take everything into consideration, this probably is the biggest sporting success I ever had in my career.”
He added: “This kind of supersedes everything that I imagined, that I hoped that I could experience, that I could feel.”
The last major title he was missing.

Djokovic was at his best during the game against Carlos despite all the pressure and with thin margins. He dominated each of the two tiebreakers against Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated him in the Wimbledon 2024 Final match just three weeks ago.
Speaking about the same, Carlos Alcaraz, who won the silver medal said: “In the close moments, in the difficult situations, in the tiebreaks, he played an impressive game,”
He added: “That’s why I saw that he’s hungry for the gold medal. He was going to go for it.”
Before defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the final clash, Novak Djokovic defeated his longtime rival Rafael Nadal in the second round and eliminated him in straight sets.
The final clash against Carlos took place for 2-hour and 50-minute and it featured many thrilling moments. While the number one seed Novak Djokovic saved eight breakpoints, on the other hand, number 2 Alcaraz saved six. The pressure was at its peak, however, Novak soaked in all the pressure and won the last significant achievement of his career “We both played at a very high level,” Djokovic said. “We really went toe-to-toe.”
Was he worried that the moment (kissing the gold medal) would never arrive? Responding to this, Djokovic said:
“There are always doubts. Absolutely, I had doubts,” Djokovic said. “But the belief and the conviction that I can make it is stronger than my doubts. It always has been. I knew that it’s going to happen. It was just a matter of when it’s going to happen.”
