Taking ODI Hat-tricks in cricket is among the highest honors for any bowler, and Sri Lanka bowlers have delivered a few of these magical moments over the years. From the all-time great Chaminda Vaas to new star Dilshan Madushanka, eight Sri Lankan players have taken an ODI hat-trick with just one of those bowlers accomplishing the feat against India.

1. Chaminda Vaas – Sri Lanka’s First ODI Hat-Trick
Opponents: Zimbabwe (2001) & Bangladesh (2003)
Hat-tricks: 2
Chaminda Vaas was the first Sri Lankan bowler to complete an ODI hat trick. His first hat trick was against Zimbabwe in 2001 and his second was against Bangladesh in 2003. Vaas with his ability to swing the ball and accuracy makes him one of Sri Lanka’s most consistent fast bowlers in history.
Notable Fact: First Sri Lankan to take an ODI hat-trick and the only one (so far) with two hat-tricks.
2. Lasith Malinga – ODI Hat-Trick Specialist
Opponents: South Africa (2007), Kenya (2011), Australia (2011)
Hat-tricks: 3
The king of toe-crushing yorkers, Lasith Malinga, has the most hat-tricks by a Sri Lankan bowler in ODIs (three), thanks in part to his unique slinging action and his death bowling skills which enabled him to achieve hat-tricks against Kenya, South Africa and Australia.
Highlight: Only Sri Lankan with three ODI hat-tricks.
Unique Achievement: Took four wickets in four balls against South Africa in 2007.
3. Farveez Maharoof – The Sole Sri Lankan with ODI Hat-Trick against India
Opponent: India (2010)
Farveez Maharoof became the first and only bowler for Sri Lanka to achieve an ODI hat-trick against India as he dismissed Ravindra Jadeja (LBW), Praveen Kumar (bowled), and Zaheer Khan (caught) in England in 2010.
Key Moment: A historic hat-trick against a resilient Indian batting order.
4. Thisara Perera – Hat-Trick vs Pakistan
Opponent: Pakistan (2012)
All-rounder Thisara Perera really proved that he was a bowling all-rounder with an ODI hat-trick against Pakistan in 2012. He dismissed Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi, and Sarfraz Ahmed in different catches.
Impact: Almost won the match for Sri Lanka with this sudden stem of wickets.
5. Wanindu Hasaranga – Youngest Sri Lankan to Take ODI Hat-Trick
Opponent: Zimbabwe (2017)
Wanindu Hasaranga started his ODI series career with a bang by taking a hat trick against Zimbabwe. Hasaranga dismissed Waller, Tiripano (LBW), and Chatara (bowled) as part of his exhibit of leg-spin talent.
Milestone: Youngest Sri Lankan ODI hat-trick taker.

6. Shehan Madushanka – Hat-Trick on ODI Debut
Opponent: Bangladesh (2018)
In an incredible debut, Shehan Madushanka had a hat-trick in his first ODI. He dismissed Mashrafe Mortaza (caught), Rubel Hossain (bowled), and Mahmudullah (caught).
Rare Record: One among the rare bowlers around the world to have taken a hat-trick on ODI debut.
7. Maheesh Theekshana – Hat-Trick against New Zealand
Opponent: New Zealand (2025)
In a 2025 ODI against New Zealand, off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana bowled a sensational over, taking Mitchell Santner, Nathan Smith, and Matt Henry all caught taking his first ODI hat-trick.
Bowling Style: Mystery spin and variations were too hot to handle for the Kiwis.
8. Dilshan Madushanka – The Most Recent Sri Lanka Bowler to Score an ODI Hat-Trick
Opponent: Zimbabwe (2025)
The most recent Sri Lankan bowler to record an ODI hat-trick is left-arm pacer, Dilshan Madushanka. He did this in 2025 against Zimbabwe by bowling out Sikandar Raza, caught Brad Evans, then bowled out Richard Ngarava.
