A professional cricketer’s life is quite difficult. To maintain their health and fitness for crucial series and games, players who want to have a lengthy career tend to miss a few games here and there. So, here is the list of players who had played the most matches in their careers:
Matches | Player | Team | Period |
185 | Sachin Tendulkar | India | 1990–1998 |
172 | Andy Flower | Zimbabwe | 1992–2001 |
162 | Hansie Cronje | South Africa | 1993–2000 |
133 | Shaun Pollock | 2000–2005 | |
132 | Richie Richardson | West Indies | 1987–1993 |
5. Richie Richardson
The last of the great West Indian players from that invincible era was Richie Richardson. He led the team from 1991 to 1996 until stepping down after West Indies’ loss in the World Cup semi-final that year. Between 1987 and 1993, Richardson played 132 games for the West Indies without missing a single one.
4. Shaun Pollock
From 2000 to 2005, the legendary South African fast bowler Shaun Pollock competed in 133 straight games. Despite bowling fast, he was incredibly fit and could, if necessary, throw a long period of 6-7 overs in a row. Pollock served as South Africa’s captain from 2000 to 2003, when he resigned after his country’s group-stage elimination from the 2003 World Cup.
3. Hansie Cronje
Hansie Cronje, a controversial former captain of South Africa, played 162 consecutive games between 1993 and 2000 before he admitted to being a match-fixer. Thanks to his brilliant leadership and unflappable batting, Cronje turned South Africa into a cricket superpower. In 2002, Cronje perished in a plane catastrophe.
2. Andy Flower
Andy Flower, a former captain of Zimbabwe and India’s primary challenger in the 2000s, made a memorable debut against Sri Lanka in the 1992 World Cup by scoring a century in both his World Cup and ODI debuts. He participated in 172 straight games from his 1992 World Cup debut to 2001. His career came to an abrupt end in 2003 when he demonstrated against the policies of the Zimbabwean government at the World Cup.
1. Sachin Tendulkar
With 185 matches, India’s young prodigy Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for the most consecutive games played. He played cricket nonstop for exactly 8 years, from 1990 to 1998, taking part in 185 ODI and Test matches. His longest streak was broken when he missed due to back concerns.
