Jhulan Goswami’s final game saw an unforgettable end as all-rounder Deepti Sharma ran Charlotte Dean out in a controversial fashion. The batter had backed up too far ahead before the ball was bowled. This mode of dismissal has a divided appeal among the fans as it is related to the spirit of the game.

The controversial mode of dismissal, known as Mankading, is a term coined after the late Indian cricketer, Vinoo Mankad. He ran out the batter at the non-striker end. Aussie batter Bill Brown is the unlucky star who had been dismissed in the 1947/48 tour of Australia.

Deepti Sharma and Mankading evoke reactions

England was riding on the last wicket partnership between Dean and Freya Davies. The duo stitched together 35 vital runs before the incident happened in the 44th over. Deepti, bowling her 8th over, ran the non-striker end out. The batter was backing up too far ahead. The Indian all-rounder who earlier scored a gritty fifty (68) appealed, and the umpire went ahead with the referral.

The Third umpire agreed with the dismissal as India won the contest by 16 runs. However, as the Indian fans erupted in joy, a few English supporters booed the fans. The dismissal also made noise on Twitter, with many fans debating the pros and cons of it.

Indian star spinner R Ashwin and England’s own Stuart Broad too voiced their opinion on Twitter. Indian spinner asked the fans to give credit to Deepti, instead of focusing on him. Earlier, cricket’s top governing body, the ICC had approved Mankading as a mode of dismissal.

Harmanpreet backs Deepti

During the post-match presser, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said she will support Deepti as her action is within the ICC laws. “I will back my player; I do not think she has done something which is not in ICC rules and it is part of the game. At the end of the day, a win is a win and you need to enjoy it,” Harman said.

Dean, the last England wicket to fall, was devastated, walking away in tears after shaking hands with the Indian players. Meanwhile, India completed a memorable 3-0 whitewash and a fitting farewell to pace legend Jhulan Goswami, who bagged 2/30 in her last appearance for India.
