Ireland has qualified for the T20 World Cup 2026 (Women’s) after a convincing win over Thailand in the final round of the global qualifiers in Nepal. With this win, Ireland is the third team to qualify for the big event, along with Bangladesh and the Netherlands. The final spot in the World Cup will be decided between Scotland and the USA, as they are set to face each other in the last match of the global qualifiers.

Ireland Post Competitive Total After Solid Top-Order Start

Choosing to bat first, Ireland scored 121/8, which may not look like an intimidating score, but it was more than enough given the struggles of Thailand throughout the tournament. Thailand had only managed to cross the 120-run mark twice in the qualifiers, and there was no chance of a third time on the day.

The Irish top order batted very well:

Amy Hunter scored 24 off 15 balls

Gaby Lewis scored 25 off 30

Orla Prendergast scored 24 off 22

At the halfway stage of the Irish innings, they were looking very positive at 71/0 after 10 overs.

Middle-Order Collapse Restricts Ireland’s Total

However, momentum was lost when Ireland lost all three set batters in quick succession by the 12th over. The middle and lower order struggled to accelerate, with only two more players scoring double figures:

Louise Little – 14 off 18 balls

Jane Maguire – 15* off 12 balls

The best bowler on the day was Thailand’s leg-spinner Suleeporn Laomi, who took 4 wickets for 24 runs, giving Thailand hope of a possible win.

Thailand Collapse Under Pressure in the Chase

While chasing 122 to stay in the competition in the qualification match, Thailand experienced their lowest scoring effort in the tournament, scoring only 59 runs in 16.1 overs.

The only resistance put up by the Thailand batting lineup came from Nannapat Koncharoenkai, who scored 15 runs, and captain Naruemol Chaiwai, who scored 22 runs, as the two added a 26-run partnership for the third wicket.

Kelly and McBride Seal an Impressive Win

The bowlers of Ireland completed the task with an impressive performance. Arlene Kelly started the attack with a phenomenal spell of 4-7 in four overs, hitting hard lengths all the while.

Off-spinner Lara McBride provided excellent support to Kelly, taking 3-6 and ending the match in her fourth over to seal a dominating 62-run win.

Ireland Book T20 World Cup 2026 Ticket in Style

This convincing victory secures Ireland’s spot in the T20 World Cup 2026, thus ending a very composed and disciplined qualification campaign. As Bangladesh and the Netherlands await the other qualifiers, one of either Scotland or the USA will soon fill the 12th spot in the biggest stage of women’s international cricket.
