Sarah Storey completed the course in 20 minutes and 22.15 seconds, beating French home favourite Heidi Gaugain by more than four seconds at Paris Paralympics 2024.

It was Storey’s 13th Paralympic gold medal in cycling, with the other five won in swimming. With this medal, she extended her record as the most successful British Paralympian. She overtook fellow-Brit swimmer Mike Kenny’s record of 16 Paralympic golds at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
The 46-year-old completed the course in 20 minutes and 22.15 seconds, beating French home favourite Heidi Gaugain by more than four seconds.
Storey won the women’s road event for a fifth consecutive Paralympics on a C5 race course measuring just 14.1km. It is the first time she has raced a Games course shorter than 22km.
However, the rider expressed her disappointment at the truncated length of the course.
“It’s a short race. This is the shortest Paralympic time trial we have ever had, and I think it’s a real shame because we don’t get to showcase Para-sport in the way we want to,” Storey said.
“You’ll have to ask organisers. There’s plenty of time in the day for us to do two laps like the men. Having fought so hard for parity in women’s cycling, to not have it is a real disappointment.
Storey’s Paralympic medal tally now stands at 29, with 16 being won in swimming between 1992-2004.
One of the most successful Paralympians, Storey has clinched 18 golds, eight silver medals and three bronze medals. She has the unique distinction of winning five gold medals in the Paralympic Games before turning 19.

Storey, a cyclist and a swimmer, is regarded as one of the most experienced athletes in the history of the Paralympics as she took part at the Paralympic Games on nine occasions in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020, and 2024. She remains the current para world record holder in women’s 3000m individual pursuit and hour record in track cycling.
The Brit could soon have the most gold medals by any active Paralympic athlete when she bids for her 19th gold in the road race on Friday.
