Australia’s cricket captain Pat Cummins will make his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for Sunrisers Hyderabad when they face Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Cummins has been out for all of IPL 2026 due to a lower back injury, and he missed the first seven games this season due to that injury.

Injury Timeline and Fitness Clearance

Cummins was initially part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad for the first game against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 28 but couldn’t play due to not being medically cleared to do so.

He returned home in early April to have some scans done and received clearance from Cricket Australia to play again and he rejoined the SRH squad on April 17.

He missed additional matches against the CSK and DC to build up his match fitness. After gradually increasing his training workload over the past couple of weeks, Pat has now indicated he is ready to re-join the team.

Pat Cummins Confirms Participation

Prior to their exciting showdown in Jaipur, Cummins commented via social media about being able to return to the field; he stated he would be very excited to do so. He will also add depth to SRH’s bowling attack, especially in the initial period of play during powerplay.

Team Combination: Who Makes Way?

With Cummins coming into the playing XI for Sunrisers Hyderabad, they will need to rearrange their overseas contingent.

Given his impressive performances on debut Dilshan Madushanka is likely to drop out. However players like Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen and Eshan Malinga should keep their positions as key overseas players in the team moving forward.

Who Will Lead SRH? Captaincy Debate Intensifies

Ishan Kishan’s Impressive Leadership

While Cummins was away, Ishan Kishan took up the role of captain and did an excellent job. Even though he had a poor start to the season, Kishan’s abilities have received praise from many quarters.

Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar mentioned some of Kishan’s qualities:

  • Wise utilization of bowlers according to game situations
  • Excellent management of spin options
  • Calculated decision-making skills

Should Cummins Reclaim Captaincy?

Kishan should keep being the captain for some good reasons which are:

  • Patty is under scrutiny with respect to his health and his levels of work.
  • Switching captains could disrupt the team’s balance.
  • Kishan has already been accepted as the team’s leader

However, Patty will still play an important role in being a leader for the team.

Leadership Dynamics in SRH

Cummins has previously exhibited flexible styles of leadership, and has played alongside players like Steve Smith, while playing in an international format, alongside Mitchell Marsh. This flexible approach allows SRH to maintain balance in their leadership structure.
