WTA Finals Titles: The WTA Finals is one of the most coveted titles in tennis, and several of the greatest players in women’s tennis have won the year-end championships on multiple occasions. 

26 players have lifted the title since the event was first introduced in 1972, and 10 of them  have won the tournament more than once.

Let us have a look at the players with most WTA Finals titles in tennis history. 

1. Martina Navratilova – 8 (1978-79, 1981, 1983-86)

Former world No 1 Martina Navratilova has eight WTA Finals titles, a record that is likely to never be broken.

She defeated Goolagong to clinch her first WTA Finals title in 1978 and then beat fellow American Tracy Austin to successfully defend her crown in 1979.

Navratilova claimed her third title in 1981 beating Andrea Jaeger, and dominated the tournament  across the mid-1980s. She defeated arch rival Chris Evert in the 1983 and 1984 finals, she then beat Helena Sukova in 1985 to win three straight titles.

She sank Hana Mandlikova in the March 1986 championships, before winning her last title by beating Steffi Graf in November of that year.

2) Serena Williams – 5 (2001, 2009, 2012-14)

23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams has won five WTA Finals titles. The American won her first title beating Lindsay Davenport in 2001, before beating sister Venus Williams to claim her second crown in 2009.

The former world No 1 then won three straight titles in her final three appearances at the event, beating Maria Sharapova in 2012, Li Na in 2013, and Simona Halep in 2014.

2) Steffi Graf – 5 (1987, 1989, 1993, 1995-96)

Steffi Graf won five WTA Finals titles across a span of nine years. The German beat Sabatini to claim her first crown in 1987, before defeating Navratilova in the 1989 final two years later.

Graf defeated Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the 1993 final and won consecutive titles in 1995 and  1996, beating Anke Huber and Martina Hingis respectively.

4) Chris Evert – 4 (1972-73, 1975, 1977)

Chris Evert was the first woman to win the WTA Finals tournament and won four WTA Finals titles of the first seven year-end championships.

The American defeated Kerry Melville to win the first WTA Finals in 1972 and defeated Nancy Richey in the 1973 final for a second straight title.

Evert won the title for a third time by defeating legendary rival Navratilova in 1975, and defeated Sue Barker to claim victory in 1977.
