The race for Champions League qualification is heading for an epic conclusion on the final day of the season on Sunday.

The race for Champions League qualification

There is now just 1 point separating fourth-in-the-table Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest in seventh, with third, fourth and fifth spots still up for grabs.

Even Manchester City are not yet certain of finishing in the top five despite beating Bournemouth this midweek.

On the final day of the season, five teams will battle for the three remaining places in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

On the final day of the Premier league season, five teams will battle for the three remaining places

The Premier League has never seen a final day quite like this. We’ve had to-the-wire battles for Champions League places before, but only ever between two clubs fighting for the final spot.

Manchester City, Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest hang by a thread and will be in for the final day theatrics.

All five clubs see Champions League qualification as essential. Two of them won’t make it and, unless Chelsea finish sixth and win the UEFA Conference League on 28 May, one will even miss out on UEFA Europa League football.

The race for next season’s Conference League place is also not quite settled yet.

If Chelsea win the Conference League and then finish seventh or Chelsea finish sixth and Newcastle seventh, eighth place in the Premier League will qualify for Europe.

Brighton

That is currently Brighton with Brentford just behind them in the league table. Both could yet snatch European football next season, but would have to wait until the Blues take on Real Betis in the Conference League final on May 28 to know for sure.
