In international cricket, Team India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja became just the second Indian player, after Kapil Dev, to take 500 wickets and score 5,000 runs on Wednesday (March 1). On the first day of the third Test between India and Australia, the 34-year-old accomplished the exceptional feat when he caught opener Travis Head leg-before for his 260th wicket in Test cricket, bringing his total to 500 wickets across the three formats.
In 171 ODIs, Jadeja has taken 189 wickets at an average of 37.36, and in 64 appearances in the shortest format, the left-arm spinner has claimed 51 dismissals. In Test cricket, Jadeja’s stock has been steadily rising as a valuable batter who has saved India from difficult circumstances both at home and away. In the longest format, he has amassed 2,619 runs at an average of 36.88, and two of his three tonnes, including a career-high 175 not out, have come in the previous 12 months.

Jadeja has scored 2,447 runs at 32.62 with 13 fifties in 171 ODIs, and 457 runs at 24.05 in 64 T20Is. The first person from India to accomplish this feat was Kapil Dev, the captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, who finished with a total of 687 dismissals in 131 Tests and 225 ODIs, respectively, by taking 434 and 253 wickets.
In Test matches, Kapil scored 5,248 runs at a rate of 31.05, including 8 centuries and 27 fifties. In one-day matches, he scored 3,783 runs at a rate of 23.09, with 14 fifties and his sole century—a stunning 175 not out against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.
Jadeja and Kapil are joined on the elite list by South Africans Jacques Kallis (25,534) and Shaun Pollock (7,386 runs and 829 wickets), Imran Khan (7,516 runs and 544 wickets), Wasim Akram (6,615 runs and 916 wickets), and Shahid Afridi, as well as players from Pakistan (11,196 runs and 541 wickets).
Sir Ian Botham of England (7,313 runs and 528 wickets), Chaminda Vaas of Sri Lanka (5,114 runs and 755 wickets), Daniel Vettori of New Zealand (6,989 runs and 667 wickets), and Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh (13,445 runs and 653 wickets) all amassed 5000 runs and 500 wickets in international cricket.
