Madrid, the defending champions, have had an astounding title defense, winning all nine games in all competitions, including six in La Liga, to enter the international break in September as the top domestic team. Despite Karim Benzema, a key first-team player, being injured, Carlo Ancelotti’s team has improved throughout the early part of the season.

In the first half of Madrid’s 3-0 thrashing of Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in their Champions League season-opening match in early September, the club’s talismanic striker suffered a knee injury. But even without Benzema, the Champions League champions have won three games in a row, including a spirit-boosting 2-1 victory away to Atletico Madrid the last time out.

Barcelona

Ancelotti’s squad has established the tone for another outstanding season as they seek back-to-back La Liga championships for the first time since 2008. Barcelona, who are currently in second place in La Liga, are not messing about, as seen by their impressive five-match league winning streak. Xavi Hernandez.

The Catalan powerhouse have won five consecutive top-flight games by an aggregate score of 18-1 since a lacklustre 0-0 home stalemate with Rayo Vallecano on the opening weekend. The Blaugrana have found a new leader in the form of Robert Lewandowski as they seek to recapture domestic supremacy after failing to win the league title in each of the previous two seasons.
